Here's a question some of you internet-savvy pundits may be able to answer for me.
How do website referrals work?
When I look at the statistics for this blog, I've noted that I'm getting significant traffic from some strange URLs that, for the life of me, I cannot understand.
At least I get www.thebigbearbutt.com although how a link to my blog ended up on a site devoted to World of Warcraft geekdom is a bit hazy. So if you, Dear Reader, are the sort of person who lives at home with your parents and stays up all night at the computer in your underwear pretending to be some elf-maiden with improbable breasts, you should go check out his site.
No, what I don't understand is the traffic I'm getting from a bunch of Ukranian and Russian sites that have absolutely NOTHING to do with investigations nor, as far as I can tell, is there any link to my blog.
So why are people coming here from there?

Right, I have it on some authority that there are tricksy site operators who may be falsely spoofing URLs in the hope that this will result in back-links.
ReplyDeleteNo such luck there, Boris!
You shouldn't be receiving any more traffic from the BBB after today, I've moved your blog off the recommended site list.
ReplyDeleteI'm really surprised that, as someone that investigates other people and relies on being able to see what someone is rather than work off of assumptions, you went right to the stereotype that ignorant people have of gamers (or even World of Warcraft players) being basement dwellers in mommies' house, etc etc.
It's pretty annoying, since I really like your writing and attitude, but that's about as far off the mark as you can get.
For the record, I'm a 48 year old former Marine, maintenance manager of an Iron Foundry, happily married with kids, and as far as I've been able to tell over 80% of my readers have similar backgrounds.
Nary a basement-dwelling troglodyte or incipient elf-porn viewer in the lot.
I normally don't reply to this stuff, since hey... it's not my problem, people think what they think and I'm not going to change their impression of me with jabber. But again, I really like your writing, and I got the impression you're a pretty level-headed and perceptive person.
It's just one of those things where, in this new digital age, being able to expand your mind (without the use of drugs) through video games is one of the cheapest AND convenient hobbies a parent can have.
Keeps me in the house with the family, instead of out getting drunk and into fights at the sports bar.
